TUNOG NI NANAY, TUNOG NG BUHAY PROGRAM
Limited Ultrasound Application in Obstetrics for Rural Health Physicians

The mortality rate for Filipino mothers has increased to 221per 100,000 live births in 2011 from 162 per 100,000 live births in 2009. Under the Millennium Development Goal (MDG), the Philippines must lower the Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR) to 52 per 100,000 live births.

Confronted with these challenges, the former Assistant Secretary of Health and former Davao Regional Medical Center (DRMC) Chief, Dr. Romulo A. Busuego has conceptualized the “Tunog ni Nanay, Tunog ng Buhay” Program in 2012 in a bid to keep up with the challenge of reducing the maternal mortality ratio.

“Tunog ni Nanay, Tunog ng Buhay”, is a program directed towards the education and training of the Rural Health Physicians in performing basic ultrasound to pregnant women, assist in patient management decisions and trigger timely referral to specialists and certified sonologists for proper diagnosis and interventions. The program objectives are:

  1. To train Rural Health Physicians in Limited Ultrasound Application in Obstetric
  2. To develop manpower skills that will implement this program
  3. To improve obstetric care even at the level of Rural Health Units
  4. To reduce MMR to 52 by 2015 (Millennium Development Goal)
  5. To strengthen Local Government Units (LGU) active participation in reducing MMR

This innovative program is managed by the following DRMC staff in partnership with the Institute of Diagnostics Medical Sonography, Inc.:

“Tunog ni Nanay, Tunog ng Buhay” Program is composed of the following personnel:

  1. Dr. Bryan O. Dalid- Program Director
  2. Dr. Rodel M. Flores- Program Manager
  3. Karen Ann M. Pilar– Program Coordinator
  4. Michelle Kaye O. Petallana– Program Support Staff
  5. Glaiza B. Lo– Program Support Staff
  6. Bobby M. Caro– Technical Support Staff

Since its launching in July 2012 at DRMC (formerly Davao Regional Hospital), the “Tunog ni Nanay, Tunog ng Buhay” program has already trained one hundred five(105) physicians (as of April 2016) from various health facilities encompassing regions IX, X, XI, XII, CARAGA and ARMM and the data are as follows:

As the new administration’s desire to improve the quality of healthcare in the Philippines and make it more affordable and accessible to medically underserved populations, this Program is earnestly hoping to continue and be replicated in other parts of the country to benefit more people, especially the poor.
