Introduction
Tertiary hospitals in Mindanao (particularly those that are government owned) are in the forefront in providing tertiary health care to the 22 million inhabitants of the region. In the realm of surgery, the majority of these hospitals are delivering substandard care, unable to meet the standards of quality surgical care as determined by the Philippine College of Surgeons (PCS) and the Philippine Society of General Surgeons (PSGS), the acknowledged accreditation body for the specialty for Surgery.
It is well known that the stamp of accreditation given to a training program provides a positive impact towards the improvement and upgrading of health care delivery. To address the need for a standardized surgical practice and lack of human resource in surgery, it is imperative that Mindanao hospitals should devise a mechanism to pursue accreditation more realistically.
Through the established of the Mindanao Integrated Surgical Residency Training Program (MISTRP), tertiary hospitals in Mindanao, starting with Southern Philippines Medical Center (SPMC formerly Davao Medical Center) and the Davao Regional Medical Center (DRMC), both government hospitals in Region XI, closely collaborated with each other and pooled together their resources to achieve a collective accreditation status in General Surgery in the pursuit of excellence, built on a foundation of a family-oriented organization and in the spirit of networking, sharing, and integration.
Vision
The MISTRP envisions integration of all interested and facility capable hospitals in Mindanao into one common residency training program for General Surgery. The MISTRP also envisions producing board certified General Surgeons who shall dedicate their services to the disadvantaged regions of Mindanao.
Mission
The MISTRP is committed to the training of resident physicians in General Surgery for the delivery of quality surgical care including research, continuing education, preventive and rehabilitative health care, that shall be comprehensive and responsive to the health needs of the people of Mindanao.
